Indiependence 2014

A day trip from Dublin to Cork to see one act might seem a bit excessive to people slightly less gig-aholic than me. But when the act in question is Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and it’s their last Irish show as a two-some after three amazing albums, then it seemed a logical step to me. The bonus that there were some other decent bands on that day made the trip all the more worth it.

Tvvins (now called All Tvvins) – comprising of part Adebisi Shank and part Cast of Cheers – are pretty bloody awesome.

Benny Smiles (a quarter of Vann Music) being awesome – and quite possibly the smiliest person I have ever seen.

Dan le Sac (at the last Irish Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip gig) – a brilliant gig, but a sad thought that I wouldn’t get to see them as a twosome again.

Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Thinking back, February 2014 was a great month for gigs for me. Any regular reader of this blog will know that I am a MASSIVE fan of Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, and each of the lads in their solo careers. Their Vicar St show came 11 days after Foals, and was one of the best gigs I’ve been to. These lads know how to bring the crowd along with them every step of the way. From Dan le Sac sneaking on during their brilliant support act Sarah Williams White’s set, to Scroob taking a phone from a guy in the audience who was filming one of their songs so that he could film the crowd from the stage (and subsequently apologising to the guy for getting him in trouble with security), this gig was just fun. To be able to say that about a gig where lyrics touch on self-harm, terminal illness, suicide, and mental illness is quite an achievement. And personally, I won’t complain about the fact that I so up close and personal that Scroob almost hit me with his mic stand – it’s the little things!

Dan le Sac versus Scroobius Pip

Dan le Sac versus Scroobius Pip are one of my favourite acts, and have been for years. Getting sick and missing part of one of their shows was integral to me starting this whole “go to as many gigs as I can” endeavour!

I have seen them a few times before and have caught a few of Scroobius Pip’s solo shows as well. Something about this show was different though. I’m not going to lie…I geeked out in a huge way. I hadn’t been this excited at a gig in a few years, and I can’t put my finger on why, on what was different about this show! I’ve always connected with their older stuff, but some of their new songs are brilliant, and their sound has really developed.

With Scroob’s lyrics becoming apparently more autobiographical and some insanely good new beats from Dan le Sac, they just keep getting better and better. Their support act Prolyphic and Buddy Peace were also amazing.
