Two Door Cinema Club

Two Door Cinema Club at the Point

Two Door Cinema Club was a gig worth overcoming my hatred of the Point, sorry… O2, for. I’ve been dying to see these lads live for ages, since getting a taster with their acoustic set at Choice Music Prize. The fact that they were supported by two of my favourite Irish live acts of recent times – The Cast of Cheers and Jape – was a significant bonus. Getting tickets late in the day meant we ended up with some of the worst in the house, but as others got upgraded, we were eventually moved to better seats in a slightly less nose-bleed section!

The Cast of Cheers were made to be seen in a venue this size, and hopefully will soon be headlining themselves. Jape, much as I love Richie, seemed a little lost and I have much preferred seeing him in smaller venues or with a festival crowd. Two Door Cinema Club ploughed through the hits – and reminded me just how many they have had – and had the crowd hopping. A room full of massive balls also helped to lighten the mood in a gig that was sparse on banter!

Le Galaxie at the VIllage

#12 Onto Festival number two of the year for me – Camden Crawl Dublin. This is new to Dublin and if this year was anything to go by, I hope it becomes a fixture. Well organised and requiring a little planning on behalf of the punters, this worked really well. The fact that it involved no camping, particularly after the cold of Vantastival, was another unexpected highlight!

Featuring a wealth of Irish and international acts, it was a case of either picking a venue and sticking there for whatever was on, or picking acts and hoping the venue wasn’t full when you got there. We did one night of each, and in my experience, CHOOSE YOUR VENUE! Pick the one act that you have just got to see, and then watch the other acts in the same venue. Friday night was built around Le Galaxie, so it was off to the Village. The fact that the Village was also host to Verse Chorus Verse (the uber talented Tony Wright, ex- of ASIWYFA), Jape and We are Scientists was a pretty awesome coincidence.

Saturday we headed to the Workmans Club to see Girl Band and NaNu NaNu and I hoped to see Toby Kaar, but was outvoted so we headed across town to the Village to see the Rubber Bandits. I was disappointed but not surprised to be proven right and to find that the venue was at capacity and we hadn’t a hope of getting in, thus ending our Camden Crawl experience.

I definitely hope to head to this in 2013 and see if it can live up to the highs of its inaugural year.

#5 March proved busier gig-wise, starting with my now annual trip to Choice Music Prize, for the first time in the Olympia rather than Vicar Street. I really find this a brilliant way to find new Irish acts to follow, or to remind me of acts that I sometimes push to the wayside.

As usual, this years  acts were an eclectic bunch, but a few gems in there kept me going on a night when I really should have been tucked up in bed with a manky chest infection. Not sure what I think of the single of the year comp yet – going to see what it is like in 2013 before I make a decision on whether I think it adds or detracts from the whole Choice vibe.
