The Original Rudeboys collect their Song of the Year award for “Never Gonna Walk Away”

I’ve hummed and hawed about what to write about Choice Music Prize this year – you know from previous posts that I love this chance to see what is deemed to be the best of music the previous year had to offer. I don’t always agree, but I always appreciate the opportunity to see acts that I might not get to see otherwise. This year, I think I’m going to keep my writing to a minimum and let my snaps do the talking – I was sitting right in the front (so close to the stage that I ended up minding the Hot Press photographer’s bag under my seat!) and this may be my last chance to sit so close. My friend who makes this annual outing with me has warned me that next year she might not let me sit so close – I sometimes forget that not everyone appreciates being quite so close to the action!

The brilliant Lisa O’Neill – as the cousin of my friends, I have to admit I was rooting for her!

The Erics

If I’m honest, I probably shouldn’t have been at the Erics. Getting over a chest infection is never the best scenario for getting the best out of a gig – freezing, knackered and hacking up a lung, I felt like I should apologise to those standing around me for the added sound effects!

But that aside, Entertainment.ie had managed to put together a great line-up for their awards night, The Erics, with some of the best acts around at the moment. Cave Ghosts and Gavin James opened up the night, followed by O Emperor (who I had been dying to see again since their new album came out) and stars of the show, Le Galaxie. It was a night definitely worth staying out past my bedtime for!

#13 – Sea Sessions 2011 should have been brilliant, but Irish festival weather put paid to that. While the festival itself had a great line-up, the star of the show in sunshine is Bundoran itself and the beautiful coastal setting of the festival site. In rain, there is little to do until the music starts and when you are trying not to have a weekend of solid drinking, this created a bit of a problem.

Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed the weekend, but I know I would have enjoyed it even more if the sun had come out for more than the last few hours on the Sunday evening.

#6 – 2011 also brought my second time going to the Choice Music Prize show in Vicar St. Although my camera phone did possibly its worst job at any gig I’d attended, the show itself was a treat. My tastes in music were pushed somewhat further than I expected by Adebisi Shank but as a line-up it really did show what a diverse array of musical talent is floating around Ireland at the moment. An acoustic set from the eventual winners Two Door Cinema Club also felt more than a little bit special.
