Bob Dylan

I was lucky enough to be brought to the Bob Dylan gig – I just hadn’t been willing to fork out the ticket prices to see the gig. Honestly, while the gig was great, and it’s one of those bucket list moments to get to see Bob Dylan live, this gig just didn’t live up to expectations.

I expected Dylan to be a little self-indulgent, and can understand that it must get boring to play the same songs again and again (although they are classics). That said, the constant re-working of songs meant that for me, often the song was half-way through before I even figured out which song it was. So I do get to say that I’ve seen Dylan, but I can’t say that I’ve seen the songs that I wanted to see in the way that I wanted to see them.20140617_202732

I owe Ian a massive thanks for the ticket and the company – and the chance to see a legend of music live. Thanks Iano!

Two Door Cinema Club

Two Door Cinema Club at the Point

Two Door Cinema Club was a gig worth overcoming my hatred of the Point, sorry… O2, for. I’ve been dying to see these lads live for ages, since getting a taster with their acoustic set at Choice Music Prize. The fact that they were supported by two of my favourite Irish live acts of recent times – The Cast of Cheers and Jape – was a significant bonus. Getting tickets late in the day meant we ended up with some of the worst in the house, but as others got upgraded, we were eventually moved to better seats in a slightly less nose-bleed section!

The Cast of Cheers were made to be seen in a venue this size, and hopefully will soon be headlining themselves. Jape, much as I love Richie, seemed a little lost and I have much preferred seeing him in smaller venues or with a festival crowd. Two Door Cinema Club ploughed through the hits – and reminded me just how many they have had – and had the crowd hopping. A room full of massive balls also helped to lighten the mood in a gig that was sparse on banter!

#9 – My next 2011 gig was a bit of an epiphany moment for me – The Script at the Point…sorry, O2…..with support from Ryan Sheridan. I had seen The Script before in the Olympia and really enjoyed them, but didn’t love this gig. It was the first time that I realised that my tastes were moving from the big venue, big production gigs (my first ever gig was Take That in the Point at the age of 12, so my blueprint had been set early) to the smaller, sweatier, more intimate, and, basically, more Irish gigs.

Yes, I know The Script are Irish, but once you put an act on stage in the Point with a big glossy production, they could be from anywhere, really. I haven’t been to the Point since and am in no rush back to be honest.
